Human Rights Day – ‘Our Everyday Essentials’
Today acts as a reminder that human rights start with each of us and thrive when we make conscious choices every day.
Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, describes this year’s theme, ‘Our Everyday Essentials,’ as a call to “reconnect with human rights, remembering they are about people, their needs, hopes, and aspirations.”
This year’s focus is on bridging the gap between principles and daily life – sparking awareness, inspiring confidence, and encouraging collective action.
The three emphases of the campaign are human rights that are:
Positive – bringing joy, safety, and dignity.
Essential – access to food, water, shelter, and peace.
Attainable – achievable through shared responsibility.
Human rights unite us across race, gender, belief, and background. In times of uncertainty, rights like safety, free expression, and participation become even more vital. They also live in everyday choices: treating others with respect, acting with integrity, collaborating, and fostering inclusion. These small actions build a culture of dignity and fairness.
